Programming Languages Explained With Music [Comic]

Curious about what music genre your favorite coding language would be? We were too, so we decided to take some educated guesses. Don’t @ us PHP and country fans.

This comic was created for the Toggl team – the people behind the world’s no. 1 time tracking app. We’re pretty passionate about time tracking, no matter what device you may be using.

Tracking your time can give a good idea of how well you’re actually working. After all, spending time at a desk does not equal productivity (in fact, less time at your desk could actually help keep you be more productive).

Enough music. What about more comics?

If you’re a frequent traveler, you may want to check out our guide to using lifehacking (aka common sense) to make your airport experience 250% more pleasant. We’ve also used dinosaurs to explain the different issues freelancers deal with when working with clients.

We’ve also done an epic piece about how the world might be a little different if it were created by a programmer. If that sort of thing is your jam, you may also enjoy The Unicorn Startup Simulator – a highly realistic, deeply immoral game about life in the gritty startup scene of Silicon Valley.

We also love animals too, especially the ones that take their time when it comes to – well, basically everything. Time management is a serious thing, but maybe Johnnie the Sloth isn’t the best mammal to look up to when it comes to organizing your life (but boy, would you get some pretty great naps if you took his advice).

We’ll also keep doing these comics, so like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram if you want these delivered directly to your eyeballs! We also post on LinkedIn if you’re going to pretend you’re doing work.

If you have any ideas for the next one, let us know where it says “Comments” or reach out to us on social media!

  1. Java being obscure that no one knows about? Dude… it’s still the no. 1/2 language by popularity. (Depending on the source/methodology.) Nope, it’s not fanboyism, even though I’ve used it a lot, in the past 6-7 years I’ve mostly been using python.

  2. Where is python or c/c++? People have outgrown c#? Java is classical and c# is hard rock even though they’re nearly the same language… Who on Earth uses lisp? Css isn’t even a programming language… Oh dear I think we’re being trolled here and I fell for it. Good marketing!

    • Yeah, many of these seem almost arbitrarily assigned. I would also disagree that anyone can do CSS. If creating Frankenstein monstrosities counts as “doing it” then anyone can do any of these. CSS is hard! Also, same tired critique of PHP, which stopped sucking a long time ago and became pretty decent, although haters failed to notice for obvious reasons.
