Home-based business are becoming more and more common in today’s marketplace. Many people wonder about the effect that this has on their validity and credibility especially when it comes to effectively cultivating new business. Often times the worry is more of a personal matter for the proprietor of a home-based business than it is for those they are courting for a professional relationship. If this happens to be a concern for you, there are steps you can take to ensure that your business is judged fairly.

The first steps come well before any sales pitch is ever conceived. You will need to lay groundwork that will make sure your business is viewed in a professional light and taken seriously rather than seen as a mere hobby.

  • Have a dedicated office space in your home. This area should be quiet and free of children and other causes of household noise. After all, it will be hard to appear professional when little Jimmy is begging to go to a friend’s house in the background of your Skype chat. Set some ground rules for your space, like making sure everyone knows that when you are a business call you are off-limits for any other conversation.
  • Have set business hours. Although there will be times when business demands will need to be met outside of these hours, try to stick to them if you can. You will appear more professional and you will maintain your own sanity if you are not on the clock 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Setup a post office box for your mail. This will keep your operating address a secret and it will be less likely that you will be revealed to be a home-based business.

Your sales pitch is what you will be judged on by those you approach. That being said, you will want to take measures to ensure that you make an effective and informative case for your business or product.

  • Preparation is key! You will want to practice what you are going to say and try to anticipate the questions that you may be asked. This will allow you to prepare your responses and be more informed about your product and business. The last thing you want when trying to be regarded as a professional is to not know everything about what you are selling.
  • Know who you are selling to. Do the leg work and learn about your audience. Knowing their backgrounds and a little about those you are pitching will allow you to develop your pitch in such a way that you will be able to make a personal connection with them.
  • Know everything there is to know about what you are selling, and how it will benefit those to whom you are making the pitch. Be sure that you outline any benefit that would be of interest to those attending your pitch.
  • Know your goals. Set a goal for your pitch and stick to it. If you enter the meeting not knowing what the desired outcome is you can’t expect to achieve anything.
  • Allow for interaction. Do not consume the presentation, but rather allow those to whom you are pitching to contribute and help shape the conversation. Often times they will be letting you know what they want, then you can give it to them.
  • Know how to close the deal. You will need to direct the pitch back to your initially identified objective and guide the closing of the deal.
