Alari is the Father of Toggl and Teamweek. In fact, he used to ask us to address him as such. To his dismay nobody ever did. He's a good guy, though. For an engineer.

How We Killed the CV as a Hiring Tool and Why We’re Never Going Back

This is a simple story of how we made hiring easy using Hundred5.   Recruitment solutions have not kept pace with the developments in the rest of the modern working culture, and the way companies approach talent search and hiring processes is too inefficient. We know, because we’ve been there.

‘Test-First’ Process For Hiring In A Startup

Last year I wrote about a new hiring practice that we were then just starting to experiment with. Now is a good time to reflect on how things have progressed since. In short, we like this concept more and more. We even gave it a name – the ’Test-First’ process, and have used it to hire 7 new team members this year. That’s quite a bunch, given our team size of 23. During our last 3 campaigns for developer openings, around 1600 people took the tests, so this system definitely shows some momentum.

(April Fool’s joke) Toggl Reaches Historic Agreement With NSA

Update: This was an April Fool’s prank. The information below has nothing to do with reality. Toggl’s priority for its customers has always been data security and service availability. Today, we are proud to announce that an agreement has been reached with the NSA to allow Toggl users to be the very first to tap into the vast potential of the cloud computing platform that only the NSA resources can offer – with NSA Hosting.

Some notes on Startup Hiring

Hiring has never been an easy task. But in the last few years, hiring engineers has become especially difficult. We have always tried to avoid traditional job ads, as these attract a lot of fortune-seekers and underqualified people. Good people are usually overloaded with work and rarely read those ads, and even more rarely send out their CVs. Head hunting did not work. What we used to do was a form of head hunting. We systematically scanned CV portals for new CVs and filtered out those who matched our profile.

Toggl Challenge – Our Weeklong Team Getaway

For the last couple of years we have experimented with an internal hackathon format called “The Toggl Challenge”. We started out in 2012 in Berlin, Germany, and this year in Liguria, Northern Italy. The Challenge is basically a week-long company retreat, where we fly out to a pre-selected place to conduct some intensive coding. We use the following format:

5 Reasons Why Startups Need Female Developers

According to Wikipedia only 10% of Computer Science degrees in the United States were awarded to women in 2010. It’s 3 times less than 30 years ago. Why is that, given the fact that teenage girls are using Internet at least on the same rate with guys? We believe that it’s instrumental having at least some female developers in your startup team. The reasons are: 1. Diversity drives innovation. Too homogenous teams tend to have weaker performance in creativity and decision making. 2. Better understanding of your customers. This is important especially for consumer-oriented startups, where most probably at least 50% of your users are women. You can understand their needs a lot better if you have some women on board.

(April Fool’s joke) Toggl Gives Up, Pivots to Timesheets

NB: This was an April Fool’s prank. The information below has nothing to do with reality and Toggl will continue being the awesome time tracking tool we all know and love. Toggl announced today that due to mounting pressure from an increasingly Luddite world, it will finally close its doors and discontinue what it previously billed as “insanely simple” time tracking. “I believed in the power of an incredibly user-friendly, totally portable time tracking service which could work on any device,” says Toggl CEO Alari Aho. “We invested in speed and efficiency, but I underestimated the physical timesheet. It’s just what people want.”
