We have launched the first version of Toggl Timeline, it:
- Helps you track time more accurately by logging your activities;
- Represents your daily computer usage in 15min chunks
To use the Timeline:
- Log in to Toggl web
- Enable Timeline (click here for detailed instructions)
- Open and log in to Toggl Desktop on your computer (click here for the latest version)
When Toggl Desktop is running, ‘events’ will be recorded on your timeline.
Why do we like it?
- When we forget to start the timer, we can hover over the blue bars and see when we started our work and even what it was that we were doing.
- The dark blue bars show us what part of the day we have covered with time entries for a quick glance at where any gaps are.
Privacy?
- Everything on your Timeline is private and visible only to you
- Every day’s info gets stored for 9 days and then deleted off the system
- It is not displayed anywhere in Reports (yet – ideas are welcome!)
Click here to read more about the Timeline in our Knowledge Base.
There’s definitely much more that we can do with this – feel free to share your ideas and thoughts on how to make it even better for you!

That’s an amazing idea! That time when you forget to switch task or start a timer happens way too often and this is going to help a lot!
Testing it out right now!
Hello,
while installing Toggl Desktop I’m continuously getting this error http://share.clira.sk/2013-01-30_15-17-55.png
(I’m on Win 8 64bit)
Is there any solution to this?
Thnx!

Hmm… I thought I followed the instructions to enable this but nothing shows up on my timeline. Do you have do something else besides enable it, download the desktop app and leave it running?
I would like to activate and deactivate the timeline tracking in Toggl Desktop too.
Actually, after refreshing the page, the timeline disappeared altogether and I can’t find any place in settings or My Profile to re-enable it!
Oops… I found how to enable it. Gear icon next to actions button. But the timeline says No Activity for today even though I’ve been doing things on my computer for about 30-45 minutes (including a task that I logged with Toggl). I know I have the latest version of the desktop toggl because I downloaded and installed it via the link in the timeline post. Is there something else you have to do in the desktop app besides just being logged in and having it running?
Thanks for the feedback!
Clira14, could you please contact support[at]toggl.com
Ellie, try using “Refresh” on Toggl Desktop menu or logging out and then in again. It seems the information of enabling timeline sometimes does not reach Toggl Desktop. We are working on a fix.
You can get more info about enabling and disabling timeline from here http://support.toggl.com/customer/portal/articles/966299#enable
Janika, I’ve logged in and out of both the web Toggl and desktop and I’ve refreshed multiple times. Still, nothing shows on the timeline although I see now that my tracked time does appear in darker blue bars beneath the timeline.
Ellie, we need more information to figure out where the problem is. Please contact support[at]toggl.com
I’m having the same problem as Ellie. I even rebooted the whole machine overnight and it is still not working. I was really excited about this feature so any help you can give would be appreciated.
Oh wow.. in the time it took me to leave that comment it suddenly started working.
It’s working for me too. Just rebooted and now it works. Not sure if it was the reboot or something on Toggl’s end.
I’m having the same trouble as Ellie. Logged out and back in, but still timeline shows no activity, although I have been working the last few hours and logged in some activity too. I’ll try to reboot and see if that works.
logging out, restarting, refreshing – nothing worked. I am still showing “no activity” even though I have logged in some billable tasks…
so, now what?
Hi, I have a suggestion that might be easy to implement now that you are offering this (awesome) feature.
I see that the information recorded by this feature is discarded after 9 days, but I wonder if it would be possible to use this feature to save a permanent snapshot of the total time that toggl desktop was open each day in order to produce a report for total time at computer vs. billable time. I think that would be pretty great
Thanks for always making toggl better!!

Any chance there will be reporting available on the timeline data?
Timeline was working for me yesterday – and I loved it! So awesome! But today, it isn’t working at all. I’ve logged in and out a couple times. It shows the dark blue bars for the time I’ve actually logged, but no light blue activity bars.
Once this works consistently, it will be a FANTASTIC feature for me.
It doesn’t work for me either. Enabled timeline on the website, downloaded and installed the newest Desktop version, but nothing shows up on my Timeline even after reboots.
This is amazing feature! This is what I was looking for and it is implemented even better than I could imagine! It is a bit unstable yet, it didn’t work for me first today after I installed the Desktop, but now it is working.
If you have trouble with the information showing up on the timeline, please email support-at-toggl-dot-com so we can take a closer look at your profile.
We’re working on sorting all the issues out and will announce updates here – thanks for letting us know, everyone!
RE: Reporting on the timeline data – we’re open for ideas here, could be a possibility for sure, keep your thoughts coming
Good idea!
But title characters in timeline are garbled (in Japanese).
Please check, thank you!
It doesn’t work…just says “no activity for today” even though I’m running toggle desktop.
Today, I logged out and in of Toggl desktop, and I got my timeline back! Hooray! I guess yesterday was a fluke – and I’ll also have to remember to log out and in of desktop every morning (rather than just closing/opening, which doesn’t automatically log me out).
It seems that Timeline is most stable with the latest desktop versions, which are: 4.88.0 for Mac and Windows, and 4.88.3 for Linux.
If it’s not working for you, please make sure you do have the latest and if not, install it from here again: http://support.toggl.com/customer/portal/articles/552102#download
(@Kamizak – can you check that also, please?)
Hello!
I’ve been having trouble getting timeline to show up ever since the first preview release. The suggestion of pausing timeline and logon/logoff got me going!
my steps:
-pause timeline recording
-log out of toggl web
-log out of toggl desktop
-log into toggl desktop
-log into toggl web
-resume timeline recording
-log out of and back into toggl desktop again
and now it works!
It’s a great feature, especially when you forget to hit the start button. Happened before en will happen again.
Maybe one tiny disadvantage: the sites you visited during a private session (I use Safari on Mac OS Lion) show in the list on timeline.
I also hardly found that gear that enables this. The problem is that in the knowledgebase, the suggestion was to go to Settings, and find that button next to Actions button. There is nothing there in fact. Instead, that gear was found on the tracking page itself. You have to fix that wrong information on support page (bottom of http://support.toggl.com/customer/portal/articles/966299-timeline).
Love this new feature. I have been trying for a couple of years to get “better” at stopping and starting tasks to get as much detail as I can. This feature covers the portion of getting “better” that was likely not attainable. Awesome to see such forward thinking in a product. Makes me think of Steve Jobs!
this sounds super! I do forget to start the timer every so often, or I don’t use it for some things and then wish I had. so I’m excited about this feature. thanks!!
Seems wiggy to me. “Activity” appears and disappears arbitrarily. Great concept, though. Please get it working!!!
Oh. I think I know what the problem is. If you are running toggl desktop on 2 computers, they delete each other’s timeline stuff.
hmmm… this was working great for me but yesterday the activity disappeared. The timeline is there and it shows the logged activity at the bottom but not the bars on the top. I am running desktop and I even logged in and out to see if that was the problem. No go. I don’t have desktop on two computer although I do use Toggl on my Android phone – could that have caused it?
BTW, tried Jesse’s suggestion above but still didn’t work.
Timeline stability has been much improved since the first week of February, and we are continually working on making it better and better. Thank you, everyone, for your continued input!
Worked fine for a few days, but since then just shows an empty timeline with “Not activity for “. Would definitely appreciate the feature.
Link to enable Toggl on this post is broken.
what happened to this feature? looks like all pages pointing to it are no longer…
Thanks for bringing our attention to this! We recently changed our Knowledge Base location and it messed up these links. Sorry about that, it’s fixed now!
I’d love to be able to view my entries (entered normally) as a timeline without needing to use the automatic logging feature. Is that possible?
Still can’t get timeline to work, seems like this should be the default daily report, why all the hoops?
Since Timeline works with the desktop app, you could track your time through another device to not see your logged time on the Timeline. All the information about Timeline is available in our Support Center (support.toggl.com)
If you have any issues – Timeline stopped working etc, then usually logging out and logging in again to your desktop app should make it work (in few minutes).
If you have any other issues related to that, please contact us to support(at)toggl(dot)com Thanks!
