Toggl Desktop 4.0 Beta released

What’s new in Toggl Desktop 4.0 Beta – for Windows, Mac and Linux?

  • Whole new layout – clearer, easier, more intuitive
  • Many little improvements in terms of speed and stability (making up a big improvement in usability)
  • Two new keyboard shortcuts: r – to reload time entries and b – to go back to home page view.

To download this Beta version:

As usual, feedback is very welcome – email us on support-at-toggl-dot-com, or even better, send it straight through the new app!

Note to all Desktop Nano and Classic users – all desktop versions before 3.0 will really and truly be deprecated on Friday, November 30th.

Really cool! Loving the new interface.

FYI, on Mac OS X Mountain Lion you may need to use right-click > Open to launch the Toggl beta app depending on your Security & Privacy settings.

It’d be nice if I could login. Though, to be fair, that’s been a problem now with the last three versions I’ve tried. Thankfully, I can keep a browser window open for the mobile site, which is basically what the old desktop apps were anyways.

    Definite improvement.

My favorite thing about the original client (not sure if it was v1 or v2) was the ability to just click on the time counter and edit the time. That was lost with v3.

v4 gets part way back to that ability — when I click on the time counter the application flips to a separate window, but my cursor is at least still located in the time counter box, which is editable.

What would make it even better would be if the cursor insertion location persisted from the main window to that 2nd window. That way I could click on the time counter and start typing, instead of having to first move the cursor back to the digit I want to edit.

I like how the font scales itself to the size of the window — nice touch.

Really appreciate this update, especially fixing the issue where it would ask for your login every time you open the app. I love the new interface thus far, the responsive layout like Hugh mentioned is a great feature :)

Definitely listen to Dan above when he says “FYI, on Mac OS X Mountain Lion you may need to use right-click > Open to launch the Toggl beta app depending on your Security & Privacy settings.”

I also had this issue. Maybe that can be resolved in future updates? So minor…love this overall!!

Nice and clean design! I like it!

Little “bug” – I can switch task to Billable even I’m not a plus user. For sure I cannot use this feature, but I can use a GUI switch.

And why it is so big? 24 MB dmg package seems to me too big. Why?

    Thanks for awesome product.

hate to say it, but just like the previous versions, it appears that the only way to track time is by starting an entry, and letting the timer run. There is no easy way to simply enter a time that has been worked, like the web interface provides.

Sadly a complete non-starter for me. App opens, but as soon as I try to do anything get a popup that says “TogglDesktop Helper EH quit unexpectedly.”

    Looking at console we have:
11/1/12 11:58:20.673 PM TogglDesktop Helper EH[736]: Internals of CFAllocator not known; out-of-memory failures via CFAllocator will not result in termination. http://crbug.com/45650

Will have to revert to version 3 for now.

  14. November 2, 2012 | Permalink

    Non-starter – can’t enter any data.
    i get:
“An error has occurred (Uncaught TypeError: Object [object DOMWindow] has no method ‘descriptionBlur’). We have been notified, please restart your application”

    Whenever I try writing anything.

    Cheers!

@William, @Stefan, @Christian – we have fixed the bug, please download an update from the same link on the blogpost.

@Anthony, if you fill out the duration field then timer will not start and the time entry will be saved automatically.

@David, @Stefan – Toggl Desktop is based on a Chromium open source project. It is basically a stripped down browser which shows a HTML user interface. That’s why the installer is ~25 MB.

@Alari Suggestion: look into native integration to the OS from the web. The newest Ubuntu has some built-in APIs (there’s http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/theres-app for other distors) and Windows can do some magic with pinned sites. Saves a rather large download (66MB when installed) and the hassle (permissions, know-how) of installing.

Other than that – great work!

Looks great, yet there’s little bug. Once I start to work on something and stop the timer later, it falls under the list of yesterday’s work. Ergo, the list of today’s tasks is somewhere in the middle of the of the list. See the screenshot here http://postimage.org/image/oia5s7sth/

Hello, nice design, but I missed all my tags. On website or Chrome extension works well but on Windows Desktop version are not visible (Windows 7 Professional SP 1). Please, can you help?

It seems to be working fine for me. I’m on Win7x64. I would like to be able to delete.
I am able to edit time. I click on it not where the green arrow is, and then can access the time to edit.
On windows you can more it via the old dos keyboard shortcuts Alt-spacebar M :)

Great update thanks (Mac version now working!).

Been using Toggl for a month now and LOVE it. However, a killer missing feature for me is the ability to start a timer from where the last one finished. Add this and you have a winner!

Rather disappointing that this means the death of toggl nano. I have zero desire to install a desktop app for an online cloud service… Being able to use nano as a Gadget in Gmail is the reason I started using toggl in the first place.

    November 5, 2012 | Permalink

I’m disappointed the classic version will no longer work after Nov. 30. Nano was a big step backwards as far as I was concerned, and I suspect this is another one. It appears to be organized by time entries rather than projects/clients, for starters.

To start a new entry in classic I need only click the project name, and type a name. Done. To continue the same task later, I click the entry under the project name. Done. To edit the time elapsed, I double click the time and type. Done.

As I recall, Nano required many more clicks and scrolls and whatnots to do the same essential tasks,if they could be done at all. Please tell me you’ve returned to the simplicity of the classic version in this new version. I don’t plan on using it until forced to.

When I first opened it there was some major problems with fonts not showing up. I had to uninstall all of my helvetica fonts and restart my system. This is probably because you use Chromium and Chome has some issues with Helvetica. https://productforums.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/chrome/J4dqHZD3dcs

I’m with Thom. Very sad to hear the Classic version is going away. I’ve tried every version put out and I always go back to Classic. Taking away the project/task list is a shame. I switch between tasks many times in a day. Having the projects/tasks right below the counter is SO nice. I just click another task and start the timer. Easy. I don’t understand why this interface is being left behind for more convoluted ones.
Incidentally, I cannot test beta 4. It won’t let me login with username/password or via Google. It just has the spinning circle icon and does nothing. Tried refreshing, reloading, reinstalling…nothing works.

Thank you all for the feedback, we really appreciate it!

@Thomasb @Roman We have created a new version of the gadget – http://www.toggl.com/mobile-gadget.xml . Unfortunately it does not fit correctly into the Gmail standard sidebar.

@Thom I fully understand why you’re upset about the discontinued Classic interface. The main reason why do this – when it was still widely used then most of the new users found it very hard to understand it’s logic as classic timer was a lot different from the experience on the website. Please give the new interface a try, it requires less clicks than Nano.

@Matt @Jon @David we are investigating why Toggl Desktop 4 is not working for you.

@Per you can use the new Toggl timer also with a web interface – https://mobile.toggl.com

This new interface’s elements are way too big. They should be sized down a bit, or at least give an option for a “condensed” view for those of us who don’t need each line item to be so huge, including the “what are you working on” input box at the top.

  49. November 9, 2012 | Permalink

Holy Crap! I was wanting a desktop version but assumed that even if one was made that it would not support Linux and yet you guys made a Linux version! That is EPIC! I am an Ubuntu user so the DEB file works for me but you may want to look into RPM for distros like Fedora if you plan on supporting more than just Debian based distributions.

Anyway, thank you VERY MUCH for this desktop version but especially for not leaving out us Linux-ers.

This new version takes too many clicks. I liked Classic better because it was so easy to start a project, pause a project and then continue with the same timer.

I think the interface is too big. (the Start button and the font for each entry)
One thing I like about Toggl Desktop is that it is small and I can leave it at the corner of my desktop to keep track of how much time has passed. It also remind me to turn the timer off when I sudden leave for meeting or phone.
I can always use a web page, which available to almost all time tracking service, for the same purpose, but the level of convenience is not the same. I have no comment about the intuitiveness, it will take time for new change from what I am used to, but I am sure that I like the compact design of the previous version.

Thank you all for the feedback! There seems be an issue with Windows version that prohibits users from logging in. It will be fixed and the update will be available soon.

@David, @Simone, @Quang, @SI – we’re looking for ways to make the view more compact. Nano and Classic both had tradeoffs that we think are better solved with the newer version. It is similar to the web version, and we can use the same form-factor for the mobile version.

Hi.. The previous Toggl Desktop had a very CLEAR day separation..
De date was written on a blue background and white text.. and the items where white text and black/grey text below it.. You can look at a glance and catch the dates very easily by just looking at the blue bars in the list..

If you look at the above image of the new beta.. The date stamp and the item colors are very close to each other. It’s not as obvious anymore at a glance where a day start or an item starts.. Looking at things ‘At a Glance’ is very important with these kind things.. Less brainpower to find things..

Please have the blue bar back or something that makes a clear separation again… Thanks..

  63. November 28, 2012 | Permalink

Like others I prefer the old design (it feels more normal on a mac, the date separate is better and you can fit more into the same amount of space), but I welcome moving the ‘Refresh’ link to the top of the page.

It’d be good if you could reduce number of clicks required to delete an item from 3 to 2. A feature that’d also be really handy would be ability to multi-select individual entries and change say, the project or client for all of the selection, if you’ve made a mistake in assigning things (a bit like how iTunes works).
