New Toggl release: m.toggl

We have just released a new application that will in time replace all our native mobile applications. You can find it by typing in https://m.toggl.com in your web browser anywhere:

It is a web app, based on HTML5, and just as with all current extra applications, you can track time with m.toggl online as well as offline. When you’re offline, the app will notify you of the fact:

Three other excellent reasons why you should use m.toggl in your mobile from now on:

  1. Fast and reponsive. Its operations have been optimized so that it would work seamlessly and quickly in all platforms across the board. Further improvements in this area are ever-continuous;
  2. Similar to Toggl main page. The user interface has been made as similar to the web page experience as possible;
  3. Google sign-in. On iPhones, m.toggl allows you to use Google sign-in as well (the current native iPhone app does not enable this).

Try it out and share your experiences with us!

    Hi,

    This is relly good news.
I am currently running iOS 5 beta and the native iPhone app was having a bit o trouble to show the time entry list while having a current entry running.

Only thing I’ve noticed so far is that switching between billable and not billable throws a JavaScript exception. Other than: Magical!

Is it utilizing the HTML5 caching/local storage features as well?

  2. Neil says: 09/26/11

Good stuff, the native app was crashing for me on iOS 5 beta. Just one thing I noticed on the web based version, editing a time seems to be a bit flaky.

Cheers, keep up the good work!

  3. Eric says: 09/27/11

PLEASE don’t get rid of the iPhone App. I used the mobile web app twice now and both times, super slow. Walking from my car to a customers lobby, waiting the entire time for the site to load. Once in the lobby, gave up and withing seconds I had my task started with the native IOS app. I don’t need new updated features in the iPhone app, but the speed is needed.

  4. Keith says: 09/27/11

Thanks for doing a new mobile site! I’m glad to see the continued updates.

Here are my quick testing thoughts:

On my Windows Phone 7, the HTML 5 app throws a localStorage error. Apparently, Microsoft does not allow local storage for IE mobile on WP7.

Loads fine on the iPad 2, but I find it less useful than the native app on the same device. First, the HTML 5 app breaks the back button on the browser and forces you to use the back link — placed right below the back button. Second, loading times for the project information are slower. Third, the projects and tasks are lumped together into one list rather than separated into two lists like the native app. I use ~40 task codes for every project, so that is a long clumsy list displaying ~400 lines to cover only ten projects, for example. The native app shows me one list of the ten projects and then another list of the task codes. Much better for mobile devices.

Firstly, thanks a lot all for trying this out and giving your feedback! Honest user feedback is what drives our developments =)

@Andreas – yes, it is using the local storage features as well.

@Neil – we’re working on the factors that you talked about.

@Eric – we’ll be launching an updated version soon with a much smaller footprint to speed this whole thing up greatly. Nevertheless, the first load will always be a bit slower than all the following, because then absolutely all data has to be pulled in the phone. From then on, m.toggl can already use the cache, making the process much, much faster.

@Keith – a patch will soon be coming to enable WinPhone users access also. We are working on your other suggestions as well.

    Thanks again, everyone!

Cool. I tried it on Android, and it seems to handle the important awkward cases (offline start, going offline during tracking, starting a project on web and stopping it on mobile) well. It does not work with the opera browser in offline mode (opera just complains that it doesn’t have a network), but that’s no problem. But it is really nice to have a consistent interface between PC/web and mobile useage.

  7. Stephan says: 10/02/11

Correction to my earlier comment: It does work in Opera mobile also in offline mode. I’m not sure why I had problems earlier. In fact, in opera it is more responsive than in the native Android browser.

  8. Victor says: 10/03/11

That’s terrible! Instead of enhancing apps for iPhone and Android you decided to put some effort to create a web-based version that would be slower anyway! Don’t you understand that people don’t use services running them in a browser? People want to have apps in their phone!

  9. Keith says: 10/08/11

I can now report that m.toggl works with Internet Explorer on WP7.5 “Mango”. Either they changed something or you did, but either way it works.

  10. George says: 10/10/11

Very nice. I tried it on Android too (Samsung GS2) and it’s great. Seems speedy too.

  11. Caroline says: 10/10/11

m.toggl.com works fine on my iPhone 4 with iOS 5 GM. After adding it to the home screen, I only get a white screen at launch after the loading screen. I’m using 3G.

  12. William says: 10/10/11

Working just fine on Android! Tho I do enjoy the UI for the native Android app, but definitely prefer the extra features with the html version. Keep up the great work!

  13. Miren says: 10/11/11

Looks great! I wonder if you are planning to pass on these features and looks to the native Android app… because I prefer having an app that talks with my phone, rather than having to use the browser. That would be awesome!

  14. Cristian says: 10/11/11

Fist of all I really like your service. I am using it more and I have recommended to others.

I tried the application on my I phone’s browser but it is very slow.

Also I am not sure what happened by today the I phone app is not working anymore. I have restarted my I phone, I tried to update the app but I had no success. Can you please help?
    Thank you

  15. liisa says: 10/11/11

@Stephan – I’m happy to hear it worked out and you’re liking mobile Toggl! :)

@Victor – I’m sorry that you feel that way. We haven’t actually ruled out native apps completely. As it stands at the moment, though, we’d like to push forward with the current m.toggl on its own.

@Keith, George, William & Miren – Thanks! It’s so great to hear all this positive feedback, thanks a lot! :)

@Caroline – are you the same Caroline who wrote to me via Support as well? I think I am getting your problem a bit better now. Can you try clearing your browser cache and see if that brings it back?

@Cristian – Can you write to me through our Support forum or via email and tell me in a bit more detail what it is about the iPhone app that stopped working exactly, so that we could pinpoint the source of the problem?

    Thank you everyone!
    Liisa

  16. Michael says: 10/11/11

I, for one, appreciate that it is a web app.

I think the local storage for html5 would be nice for storing project names & such. :)

  17. Todd says: 10/17/11

I agree with @Victor. I much prefer the native apps – the user experience is much better. I do understand that a mobile browser app can be used on more platforms with less development effort overall.

I’m an iPhone 4. When I first started using it I found it way too slow on launch. This is pretty much a showstopper for a time tracking app. So I went back to the native app. After ios5 upgrade I tried again and now all I’m getting is a white screen when I launch.

Good luck with your development. If you are going away from native apps I hope the user experience can be improved to match the native apps – or at least close to that experience.

    Thanks again! :)

  18. Eric says: 10/23/11

I have to throw my two cents in again. It seems I am not the only one hoping for a native iPhone app that will work with IOS5. I just need basic time tracking via the iPhone and I use the web via a PC for more detailed work. I have tried to use the mobile webapp as much as possible the past two weeks and it is by far a huge step backward. I have customers where I get little to no signal and could not use the mobile app at all. Even in areas of all bars, it is significantly slower to use. Again, PLEASE continue to support the native iPhone app with at least basic functionality. I don’t want to go back top paper.

  19. Russ says: 10/24/11

Another vote for the native app here. In our office building we get 4 bars of 3G service but it’s still really slow due to volume of users. I cannot use this tool if I’m waiting this long every time.

Also, if you insist on using this format, can you make it easier to edit the “Duration” field? The “wheels” on the native app are perfect – I understand if you’re going for fast web-based you can’t have fancy graphics, but at least have the keyboard default to the number field and make it easier to open duration – right now unless i tap on the exact right place, it turns pink for a second and then it’s back to the main screen.

  20. Ver says: 10/25/11

    Hmmm…. BB support, anyone?

  21. liisa says: 10/25/11

All iPhone app users – it has indeed appeared that for some reason, the Toggl native app for iPhones does not work with the new iOS5 upgrade. Since we are making a move towards Mobile Toggl, we are not developing our iPhone application any further, though. However, Mobile Toggl does work on iPhones, so I’d like to refer you back to this. Additionally, like I said before, we have not entirely ruled out all native apps either, there might well be something coming up again at some point.

@Todd & Eric – we have optimized Mobile Toggl significantly since it was first launched, it should now be much faster. Can you make sure you have the newest version, 3.1.98, and try again? (Clear your cache if need be)

@Eric & Russ – You say Mobile Toggl doesn’t work well in areas of low signal? If it is slow due to a slow internet connection, I’d recommend turning the internet off on your phone and using m.toggl.com offline (it does work!), and then turn the internet back on just occasionally to sync all entries online to be saved to our servers.

@Ver – Currently, there are no plans for BlackBerry support, sorry!

  22. Joel says: 10/26/11

I’m having an impossible time modifying the start time or duration of an already running task on my iPhone 4 running iOS 5. It keeps on skipping to fields further down the screen even though I’m carefully tapping right in the middle of the field that I’m trying to modify. Very frustrating!

  23. liisa says: 10/26/11

Thanks, Joel, for reporting this – we managed to repeat the problem and are looking into this now. Will update when I know more!

  24. mds says: 10/27/11

Just tried the mobile html5 app on a ipod touch (ios5) and it gives an error message and won’t load. I think I will give up on toggl and look for another app. the native app of course crashes.. since it no longer supported.

  25. liisa says: 10/28/11

@Mds – what error message do you get? Could you contact me via our user forum or email (support [at] toggl.com) so we can figure this out? Thanks!

  26. Stephen says: 11/10/11

Just tried opening the app, keep continuously receiving the error:
“Cannot Open Page — Safari cannot open the page because too many redirects occurred.”

  27. liisa says: 11/15/11

@Stephen – Thank you for the feedback! We are looking into this, keen to fix it ASAP. Is anyone else experiencing this? Are there any other details you can give me about this error, screenshots, any special actions? Do you have another browser you could try open m.toggl with? What mobile device and which version of it are you using when you get the error? Have you tried clearing your browser cache (cookies and history have also helped in some cases)? Can you contact me via our support forum with more details? Thank you!

  28. Colby V says: 11/17/11

Can’t use m.toggl.com due to the redirects. Am writing this through the twitter app on the iPhone. You should also focus your browser redirect to the time tracking pages. Otherwise, with this “too many redirects problem” you can’t reach the site at all.

  29. Stephan says: 11/17/11

Hello again, I appreciate that this is in development and may improve, but to be honest, I’m getting to a stage where I feel I can’t really use the mobile version productively. It is slow and has a lot of problems when the connection isn’t good (see forum for details). I don’t know if this is something that can be changed at all, because the browser is designed for online, and I don’t know if it will ever be able to handle offline situations reliably without trying to connect (which takes time and resources).

Anyway, I would kindly ask you to reconsider and update the native Android application and not focus exclusively on the mobile website. Alternatively, there are dozens of (apparently good) time tracking apps in the android market, so perhaps you can team up with one and get them to synchronize with Toggl?

    Thanks
    Stephan

  30. Colby V says: 11/17/11

Was able to use m.toggl on the iPad2 without a problem. So I’m not sure why my AT&T iPhone 4 (iOS 5.0.1) is choking on the redirects. Maybe one compromise is to call in your webapp in the webkit browser in a native shell? Seems like offline and app is preference. But I’m using the free service too.

  31. liisa says: 11/18/11

Hi guys, do you have cookies enabled on your browser? Disabled cookies could be causing the redirect-problem. Thanks, Liisa.

  32. ben says: 11/27/11

Are there any plans to make either the m.toggle.com site or the app work with a 1g ipod touch? The latest iOS apple has released for it is 3.1.3 (7E18

  33. Jan Müller says: 11/30/11

Hi guys, could you get the input field for the task auto-wipe the text it contains on receiving focus? That would be a good improvement. Having to wipe the text (enter description) every time is annoying.
Also I noticed that changing time entries does not work properly. Once I set a starting time I can not edit it again. It always jumps to the end time field on focus.
Tested / using on iPhone 4.
Other than that I like it (even though the native app was better in terms of performance but the sync issues were annoying).

  34. Wojtek says: 12/04/11

    > and it seems to handle the important awkward cases (offline start, going offline during tracking, starting a project on web and stopping it on mobile) well

This comment saved me a bit of testing. Thanks Stephan!

  35. Stephan says: 12/12/11

Hello, is there any news on an updated native Android version? I was initially enthusiastic about the mobile version and it seemed to work well, but recently it has just been a lot of frustration as it is so slow and unresponsive. I’ve submitted extensive descriptions of the problems in the forum, but I just don’t believe any more that this will work. I really need a client that does not freeze endlessly all the time. Also the Android client had so many other advantages (status line, widget, use of android back button etc.) – just a shame that it doesn’t use the “save start&end” system. If this could be updated, it would really be appreciated.

  36. Eric says: 12/31/11

I agree with Stephan, except for the iPhone. I have tried to keep an open mind and use the m. app, but it is nothing but issues. I start and entry, but then it goes back to stopped, or I stop an entry only to find out later it never stopped. I had one entry running for 74 hours even though I was using the web interface on the PC during that period. Items aren’t sorted, etc. I don’t understand why it would be difficult to just fix the existing iPhone app, that worked fine, to run on IOS5. I think I’m back to pen and paper if not.

  37. Yan says: 01/01/12

From the time I upgraded to iOS 5 , toggl app is totally unusable. It crashes all the time (tried to reinstall it , didn’t help).

    Please fix it.

  38. Yan says: 01/01/12

A comment for iPhone app – please don’t use local time when starting the task (use time from server!). It causes a lot of confusion if toggl is used from mobile and web at the same time.

  39. Dino says: 01/09/12

Works well on Windows Phone IE 9 browser!

  40. Matt says: 01/25/12

I agree with Stephan’s comment — upgraded to the new app and noticed it was immediately slower than the Android version I had been using, with a blank screen at startup that lasts several seconds (presumably while it is trying to connect). Also noticed issues with syncing that I’ve never had before — I stop the timer on my phone, go to the web, and the timer is still running several hours later. Need to re-start the phone timer to manually refresh.
I’ve been using Toggl for several years now, but am for the first time questioning whether it will continue to meet my needs. The mobile phone version needs to be solid, and right now it isn’t. If I could return to the previous version now, I would.

  41. Potential User says: 02/22/12

Bummer, I am often out of WiFi coverage when I need to track time.
I guess I cannot use this on my Kindle Fire.
