With today’s release, a lot of stuff was dropped:

If you are experiencing strange behaviour, do a refresh to the web page or Toggl Desktop. Questions, comments and everything else can be posted here as a comment or you can write directly to our support mail address.

Toggl Team

UPDATE: There has been a lot of complaints about missing features in the new Classic timer. Here is a list of things that we are improving in the very near future (hopefully we’ll manage to do it next week):

  • search bar – will search from the task names again;
  • click on a project name – will start a new task;
  • title of the pop-out  window – will include the current task name in it.

    I already miss the old Classic timer, which was MUCH more flexible for those of us who want to add tasks with specific times rather than run the timer. The timers available now require additional steps — can’t just add start and stop time, then calculate duration, then save, as I could with old version.

    Kudos on the new timer, I’m loving it. Some of the fields and buttons are a lil obscure but I’m getting used to it. My only complaint is that I can no longer add clients inside of the timer, I have to choose from already existing clients.

    I submitted report of Toggl Desktop 2 crashing on Windows XP 4 months ago and the problem still persists. Now that Toggl Desktop 1.0.3 (which did work on my system) is blocked, can someone recommend either workarounds (not involving using browser) or an alternative timer service and/or application.

    What Phil Katz said–I really miss the calculate button.

    When the new timer was introduced, I brought this up on the blog, and the response was that it would be added “over time”. Any update on when that might be?

  6. Jerry C Mancuso says: 07/01/10

    This is frustrating to me. The old Classic timer may not have been as “sleek”, but it was more efficient to use.

    I wish at least that you could still click on the project name to start a new task for that project instead of having to go to the side and click the tiny + sign. Or, have to start a new project from the big + sign at the top, and then have to choose the project from there.

    I’m stuck at “synchronizing timer”, whether I’m set for nano or classic. (Bug report already filed.)

  8. Jason says: 07/01/10

    Mixed feelings here – been using the classic timer for years. That + button definitely way too small, but the rest I might be able to get used to over time.

  9. Jason says: 07/01/10

    While you can change the time using the calendar, the duration is not affected in anyway.

    Seems like a bug, and makes changing the times almost useless. The reports will show the duration without taking into consideration the start/end times.

    I will say though – the treatment for highlighting the currently active task is very nice, and there is a better feel for going between various tasks throughout the day.

    I like the new look. I am sure I will get used to the look and feel of the new classic.

    However, I agree with the comments about the time calculate. I used that function a lot – especially to load time entries against clients for support phone calls.

    I also used the ability to create a new client when creating a new project frequently. I strongly feel this is an important feature and should be added back in as soon as humanly possible!

  11. Jon M says: 07/02/10

    Like the new look, but since I switch between 4-5 projects frequently each day – - I miss the ability to sort tasks by “Todays” tasks. I wish there was a timer that would let me reselect old tasks to set up my day (like the old classic) and then just let me see those tasks each with a big red start button. Then i would just need to push the botton on a new task to stop an existing task and start the timer on the new one. One step. thanks

    I’ll echo appreciation for the look – but have a number of issues:
    * Search no longer searches in the Tasks, only the Projects. I preferred it as a global search as it allowed me to immediately jump to the right item with only a few letters typed.
    * When closing the date/time entry, the entire “X” is not sensitive to clicks – only the bottom third, so while the X is big enough, the valid area is not.

    And I’m adding my vote for the following already mentioned:
    * Loss of the calculate feature is sorely missed – even though I time most of my work, “fixing” a missed switch was cake. Now I have to open it up in my browser to complete the action.
    * “+” sign WAY too small and inconvenient – much prefer the whole name being the trigger. I can see that it prevents the accidental start of new tasks, but my error rate was low with the old model, and frustration rate high with the new.
    * Loss of “Today’s tasks” another pain. I used it “daily”. ;)

    I do like the gradient, new time display and ability to change projects – but I’m not liking the usability based on the lack of old features.

  13. alex-and-r says: 07/02/10

    The same for the old classic timer – miss it! Me personally miss the ability to pop it out from the page into separate window.
    Can you please bring this feature back?

  14. jaanus says: 07/02/10

    @Rob Zafu – Since we have not been able to reproduce the crashing, it is quite impossible to find the cause and fix it. An alternative is to use Mozilla Prism (http://prism.mozillalabs.com/) to get the timer to your desktop.

    @Jerry – We’ll add the possibility to start a new task by clicking on the project name back.

    @Steven – Try clearing your browsers cache and reloading the web page.

    @Jason – This is expected bahaviour. Duration and start/stop times are not dependent on each other. Start/stop times are just meta-information about when you started that task and when you finished it. Since you can pause the task, do other stuff, and then resume it, duration does not always equal stop time minus start time.

    @Michael – We have already plans to upgrade the search to include tasks. What browser are you using? I would like to reproduce the “X” not being sensitive issue.

    @alex-and-r – You can pop out the timer by clicking on the icon on the top-left. A menu will appear where you have an option to pop it out.

  15. alex-and-r says: 07/02/10

    @jaanus – Thank you very much! Didn’t find it myself! :(

    And one more request from me: Make me do less clicks! :)

    When I scroll over tasks in new classic timer I see “trash” icon appearing in a row of a task I scroll over. Why no “resume” button appears in the same row along with “trash” icon? Why I have to click on a task and then click on that beautiful red button at the top of a timer to actually launch a timer? As far as I remember in old times I could resume a task in one click! :)
    And it’s even worse when I’m resuming the task from last day: I click to select a task, I click on “continue today”, I click on our favorite red button! So it’s 3 clicks instead of one! Don’t you think, it’s too much?! :)

  16. alari says: 07/02/10

    @alex-and-r You can resolve the multiple-click issue by going to My Settings page in Toggl and changing the ‘START TASKS AUTOMATICALLY IN THE TIMER’ setting.

  17. alex-and-r says: 07/02/10

    Oh, and one more thing! :)

    In previous classic timer it was really convenient that current project, under which time was counting, was shown at the title of timer window. So, when working in other windows, it was only a matter of looking in the task bar to see if the correct project is selected in the timer. And now I need to switch to timer window to check if I’m logging the time under right project and then switch back to application window to actually do some work.

  18. alex-and-r says: 07/02/10

    @alari – Wow! Didn’t find it myself again! Thank you! :)

    Poor inattentive me! :(

  19. Chris says: 07/02/10

    In the new Desktop (for Windows) deleteing tasks only works occassionally. Deleteing tasks from the website has the same results.

    Any suggestions?

    I look forward to your help. Thanks.

  20. Kenneth says: 07/02/10

    So, am I hearing that the “calculate” feature is NOT coming back?

  21. Jon M says: 07/02/10

    @alari – thanks for the tip to resolve multiple click issues. That tip and a switch back to the Nano – and i am set!

  22. Marian says: 07/02/10

    I’ve lost the ability to open multiple timers and to move it off the page – i hope you restore that feature. Also I need the edit feature with calculate and update functions. Please add that back! I also have no Old Classic option. The new is nice but i really use the edit feature and moving multiple timers off the page.

  23. Jason says: 07/02/10

    @jaanus – Thank you for the response regarding the duration and start/stop time. It makes sense now why they’re kept separate. I guess I never really thought about it much when using calculate.

    Funny though how you can put in 5hrs of work between 3pm -> 1pm :)

  24. Marian says: 07/02/10

    ok i figured out the pop out. While your explanation of the start/stop time has some validity, it leaves a lot to be desired in filling in what was done off site or missed tracking. If it means another line item, fine, but we really want it back with calculate and save options please. Thanks.

  25. Pen says: 07/06/10

    With the switch over to the new timer, I seem to have lost half of my time for 7/1 and all of my time for 7/2– help!

  26. Taylor says: 07/06/10

    I like the fresh look, but boy I REALLY miss the calculate button on the dashboard / timer page. I used that all the time. Unless I’m missing something it takes a lot of clicks now to open up the task in the TASKS page and use the calculate feature there.

  27. alari says: 07/06/10

    Good news – calculate button is coming back. We’ll release it together with several other updates early next week. Cheers!

  28. Eric says: 07/07/10

    Yay for the returning calculate button! I was getting worried with no response to the comments :)

  29. Diane says: 07/07/10

    I don’t understand the “continue today” thing that pops up when I try to start timing a task. I just want it to start the clock. I don’t want to have to click on additional things. Can I shut that option off somewhere or default an answer so it won’t ask?

    I have to say the switch to the new timer really messed me up to. I was clocking away and happened to have a FireFox crash, when I restarted it, my Toggl suddenly had a different timer and had lost everything I’d clocked for the whole day. If FF hadn’t crashed, who knows how long I’d gone without realizing the timer I was using wasn’t really working. Obviously a lot of us leave the website up without refreshing for days. A new feature launch needs to be non-destructive to our workflow.

    I add my voice to wanting my active tasks sorted at the top. It reduces the efficiency of the timer to have to scroll through long lists to start and stop projects for the day. I’m in and out of multiple things all day, but I keep all of my projects active even if I may not use them for weeks on end.

  30. Michael D says: 07/07/10

    @jaanus – thanks for the info – glad to hear some of this is coming back!

    I was actually referring to the desktop app (though I typically use Opera 10 as my browser).

    If you wish, I can add some screenshots to my post on getsatisfaction (http://bit.ly/b6voMc) if you’d like to see the detail.

  31. Lorraine says: 07/08/10

    I completely agree with Phil Katz, Michael D, et al. Now there are more steps involved to do the same amount of work. Epic usability fail. The new version is frustrating as a PM & to my team. Just when they were finally accepting the tool. All I’ve had are problems with the update.

  32. Rob says: 07/21/10

    Can you please document for the API all of the fields (JSON name & HTML Field Label) & acceptable values for each of the API requests?

    Additionally I am looking for the API to allow the following:
    * Copy Existing Project Completely Into New Project (including Team)
    * Close/Archive Projects
    * Download Reports
    * Create Clients
    * Edit Project Team
    * Get list of Tags in Workspace

  33. Da Man says: 03/07/11

    I hate Toggl. Pure and simple, just flat out hatred. Nothing about it works. It’s slow, crashes all the time, and is very counterintuitive. Fortunately, I’ve been able to convince my office manager to replace it as our office timekeeping system. Curious if anyone else out there has looked for adequate replacements. Open to all suggestions.
