The new Classic timer has arrived

32 Responses »

We are very happy to announce that a new version of the Classic timer has been launched. The new version is a complete rewrite and here are the changes compared to the old version:

  • new design;
  • support for tasks without a project;
  • possibility to change a task’s project;
  • no task edit view;
  • the project/task list does not expand when hovering;
  • a lot faster.

Since the new Classic is still in the beta stage then there are a few features that are not available yet:

  • offline mode;
  • support for Internet Explorer;
  • possibility to hide old tasks;
  • the handling/display of old tasks needs to be tweaked.

Go ahead and try it out: go to “My settings” and select “Classic Nova” as the default timer.

Cheers,
Toggl Team

The new Classic timer

The old classic timer is now giving me a timeout error that shuts down Chrome and irritates Firefox. I switched to the Classic Nano (which is very cool) to solve the problem but thought I’d leave a note in case other people see similar issues.

calisotaMarch 17th, 2010 at 6:11 pm

I am seeing the same issue with the old classic timer. My Nano widget continues to work, but when I open up the dashboard (where I have the classic configured for use), it freezes and I have to quit Firefox. I did remove the toggl.com address from the offline storage settings, but this has not resolved the issue. I’m using Windows XP.

The new version of the Classic looks great…can’t wait to get this issue resolved so I can start using it.

The new release apparently broke old Classic. We’re working on a hotfix at the very moment. Really sorry!

alariMarch 17th, 2010 at 6:26 pm

There is no need to reinstall Toggl Desktop. The new classic is available in browser only at the moment. Will be available in Toggl Desktop after a while.

KennethMarch 17th, 2010 at 6:53 pm

I’m having the same problem with the classic timer.

On another issue…the Nova timers were cool, but I couldn’t find how to tell them to recalculate the time given to a task based on new start/end times. Is it in the Nova timers?

alariMarch 17th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Hi Kenneth, we’re working on a classic timer fix. It should arrive soon.

The new classic is still missing several features, including ‘Calculate’ button. We’ll add these missing things gradually over time.

Right now we’d be glad to get feedback on the new timer – what do you think of the general look and feel? What is your opinion on the usability?

calisotaMarch 17th, 2010 at 7:30 pm

Thanks for working on a fix so quickly. I can’t even log in and switch my settings to display the Nano version instead of the Classic version. Firefox freezes up before I can do that.

Also, is it possible to bump up the priority on adding the ‘Calculate’ button to the new classic version? I use this functionality ALL the time with the old classic. I often start my task timer later than I actually started the task so it helps to go back and manually enter the start time. Also, it would be great if we had the option to calculate and add time. For example, I work on my task 8:00 – 8:30. Take a break and then go back to the task at 9:00 but forget to start the timer until 9:15. I’d like to manually enter the start time of current timing of the task to 9:00 and add that 15 minutes to my already existing 30 minutes from earlier in the morning.

alariMarch 17th, 2010 at 7:35 pm

The fix is ready. We’re doing some testing on it and will deploy it asap.

We wanted to push the new Classic out as early as possible to get initial feedback. That’s why some features are still missing.

KennethMarch 17th, 2010 at 7:57 pm

New timer feedback, eh? Well, let’s see…

I seemed to have trouble “repeating” tasks from previous day; it seemed like the “continue this task” button just put a new task on the previous day, although I didn’t mess around with it enough to be sure. But I ended up with a bunch of task entries on yesterday when I was messing around with that. I guess, maybe that doesn’t do what I expect?

Other than that and the calculate thing, It’s fine. I actually think that it’s better than the old one–it seems more responsive, at least, which is a good thing. I will probably go back to the Classic one when you guys deploy the fix but I’ll check the Nova version as you guys refine it.

GordonMarch 17th, 2010 at 8:24 pm

It looks the the update affected the nano nova and nano. All my task for this week have moved to the day before and the on/off buttons no longer show. Any suggestions?

alariMarch 17th, 2010 at 10:11 pm

The old classic should work by now. Please let us know if you have any problems with it.

We have a specific timezone issue with Nano timers. It should be remedied by tomorrow. Sorry!

AngeliqueMarch 17th, 2010 at 11:30 pm

Just like Gordon, all my tasks have moved a day earlier and the red on/off button is not visible.

Jim BrownMarch 18th, 2010 at 12:25 am

+1 on Gordon’s comment. Very frustrating when a product you rely on (and pay for) is not properly tested before being released.

AlirezaMarch 19th, 2010 at 9:57 am

have the same problem as Gordon…
I start using my old trusty spread sheet again.
I have lost track of what I did this couple of days!!

jaanusMarch 19th, 2010 at 12:09 pm

The start/stop button image is back. If you don’t see it already then please close and reopen Toggl Desktop.

We are working on the issue of tasks appearing on the wrong day.

AlirezaMarch 19th, 2010 at 6:17 pm

I also can not change the date back to where it should be even on the browser! the task is recorded as March 17 and I want to change it to where it should be March 18. when I save nothing happens!!

azMarch 21st, 2010 at 7:22 am

I’m also having the same date problem. It seems to happen at night, apparently, as during the morning it works ok.

The timer creates the task at a different date, and you can’t change it back. My solution was to go to the browser and edit the start and end time to about 10am to 11am (as i don’t care about those values but the total hour value). Only then the task can be saved in the correct date.

It’s trully disappointing that the toggle team have been so careless with the latest change that is clearly affecting users. They should’ve test better…and even if accept this, it’s also disappointing the lack of communication. Not sure if I’m wrong, but there doesn’t seem to be a blog post about this issue anywhere on their blog, is there?

I don’t expect the product to be perfect all the time, but I think they should be responsive to this type of issues that make the product unusable.

I love Toggle, and I’ve been pacient, but I’m starting to look for other options already. I’m really disappointed with how they’ve reacted to this problem.

jaanusMarch 22nd, 2010 at 12:06 pm

@az – We are working on the wrong date problem. You are right, there is currently no blog post about it, however there is a vivid discussion about the problems, that we are having lately, in our user forum (http://getsatisfaction.com/toggl). I recommend visiting that forum when problems arise because there is a chance that the issue has already been addressed there.

Again, we are working on the problem and the fix will be launched as soon as we have found a solution. I assure you that we are not enjoying the current situation and are doing everything to fix the problems. I’m sorry.

DianeMarch 22nd, 2010 at 1:48 pm

I haven’t had the timer work on my Windows 7 laptop in Firefox for some time. I just get the loading icon. I have to switch to IE using IE tab to get the timer, and then sign in again. I also haven’t updated Firefox with the latest update since IE tab is one of the addons listed as not compatible, and I need IE tab to use the Toggl timer. Also, the timer I’m seeing in IE tab looks the same as always, so perhaps the new timer is not working for me.

jaanusMarch 22nd, 2010 at 4:59 pm

@Diane – Have you seen this blog post: http://blog.toggl.com/2010/02/attention-firefox-users/

About the date problems:
The fix for the date problem has now been launched.
Since the problem was on the javascript side then I recommend clearing your browsers cahce and reloading Toggl web page.

The issue appeared on specific tasks when a task’s start time minus your timezone was close to midnight. Let me know what happens when you try to change dates!

There doesn’t seem to be a way to pop the new classic timer out into it’s own brower window.

TimApril 26th, 2010 at 9:34 am

Just switched over and I’m really liking it – yet to see if there’s any bugs for me, but the look and feel is great. Seems to be quicker to use. Thanks for the great service!

Matt AlexanderMay 15th, 2010 at 2:33 am

This looks awesome but I almost exclusively use Toogl Desktop. What’s the schedule for putting this into Desktop?

Thanks and keep up the very excellent work!

DougJuly 2nd, 2010 at 6:17 pm

Like any new procedure, it will take time to get used to the look and feel of the New timer. I have to admit that the Classic timer was pretty clunky, but (like everyone else) I got used to it and learned the somewhat awkward sequence to input my appointment hours, clients, projects and tags – then to calculate & record the task time. The New timer will also have a learning curve – with new sequencing required. But, having a quick “Calculate” button back is essential.

MarianJuly 2nd, 2010 at 7:02 pm

I really don’t like the “no edit” function. I used that all the time. I no longer see an option for old classic. If it’s beta, then i recommend you add back the edit feature. Thanks.
