Updated reports and a new dashboard

42 Comments

We just launched a new version of Toggl. Most of the improvements/modifications are on the reports side but there also other updates.

Here is a list of things done:

  • the weekly report is back; available from the reports – select the view icon that says “7″;
  • the group by tasks view; available from the project view;
  • the client filter;
  • the no-tags filter;
  • the possibility to add several tags to several tasks at a time;
  • a redesigned dashboard with tracking information, latest blog posts and links to Toggl Desktop and iPhone applications.

Here is a screen shot of the new dashboard:

The new dashboard

If there is anything else missing in the new reports, let us know!

Cheers,

Toggl Team

    Could you bring back the ability of selecting a client/project from a dropdown menu? It’s a lot quicker than typing everyone’s name out (especially since I don’t remember all of my clients/projects)

    Could you bring back the dashboard where i could see my individual hours? I’m getting the total hours for my team. Is there a way to change the settings so I just see my own?

  3. jaanus says: 11/04/09

    Laura, this is a bug. You should be able to see only your own tasks on the dashboard. We will fix this issue tomorrow.

  4. Jennifer Vickery says: 11/04/09

    Hello! Yes looking for old dashboard please. I don’t see my individual hours.

  5. Ron says: 11/04/09

    Thank you!!

    I use Toggl on a laptop with a 15 inch screen. The highest resolution my screen allows me is 1024×768. Thus, I don’t have as much screen real estate as others. This wasn’t a problem with the old dashboard because the bar chart was on a line by itself.

    Since the dashboard now puts the total time, pie chart, and line graph on the same line, there’s less space for them to be displayed and thus it’s harder to tell at a glance just how much time I’ve spent this week. The line chart especially has issues, as it comes out very squashed. This makes it hard to read, so I can’t easily tell at a glance how much I’ve worked this week per day (I have a flexible working schedule, so I use Toggl to make sure I’m actually working the # of hours I should be.) The bar chart was much easier to read, in my opinion, since each day was concrete.

    Also, I would prefer the y-axis of the line to reflect an 8-hour day. Better yet, have a setting that lets us say what our default daily hours are, since not everyone works an 8-hour day.

    Really liking the new style layout – very nice!

    Any chance you could bring back being able to filter by billable/non-billable (can’t spot how you can do it if it is available).

    Thanks!

  8. Joe says: 11/04/09

    I very much like the ‘old’ dashboard where I can see my individual hours and the pie chart. So I’m glad to hear that will be coming back.

    Can you also add the ability to view the previous week in the Dashboard?

    I’d LOVE to see that. Especially since I often work on the weekends. But come Monday anything I did over the weekend is gone from my Dashboard view.

  9. Andy says: 11/04/09

    Need to have the dashboard display just my hours and not the whole team’s. Also, I preferred the drop-down menus for the reports.

    All this tinkering with the site has my co-workers frustrated. I spent a good 30 minutes educating them on how to use Toggl and the benefits of the site about three weeks back, and now everything has changed.

  10. Karen L says: 11/04/09

    @Joe: If you go into your settings, you can change what day is the beginning of the week. For example, if you set your beginning of the week to Sat, then on the dashboard you should see Saturday – Friday hours, rather than Monday – Sunday hours. That might help you.

  11. Sue says: 11/05/09

    Would be nice to get the pie graph of only my time for any chosen week rather than just current week in dashboard.

    Very good the latest news (redesign, new reports design and new dashboard).

    But I must to report two bugs that I’ve noticed today.
    First, like said by Laura, the dashboard is displaying the team’s total work time, not my individual time.
    The other bug is in the dashboard’s chart. The bottom line is displaying correct date (ie. 3/11), but when you point at the chart mark for that date (ie. 20 hours) it pops up a tooltip informing the right amount of hours, but with the wrong date (when pointing in the 3/11 mark, it shows 2/11 in the tooltip).

  14. Charles Schaefer says: 11/05/09

    I’ve just noticed that the chart bug is present in the report charts too.

  15. Matthew Reinbold says: 11/05/09

    I also very much prefer the old version of the dashboard. If I want to see team based info I usually go into reports and pull based on project. The new dashboard just seemed cluttered and it doesn’t show me where I am at for the week.

  16. Doug L. says: 11/05/09

    It’s great… the Toggl interface, efficiency, reporting style, intuitiveness just keeps getting better & better.

    Thanks for everybody involved.

  17. C. Harwood says: 11/05/09

    I like the redesign, but I am hoping to be able to distinguish billable from non-billable time as I was with the old chart. The way that had been set up was ideal for my purposes (w/ a “Billable” line and a “Total” line). The visual indicator (rather than the numbers provided on the left) gave me a better at-a-glance sense of how I was using my time.

  18. Joe says: 11/05/09

    @Karen L Thanks for that tip. That helps a little, I suppose.

    The best would be able to view previous weeks via Dashboard instead of just the current week.

    Like Matthew R, if I want to see Team data I’ll go to Reports and pull based on Project or other criteria. But for my own individual data, it would be extremely helpful to be able to view previous weeks’ Dashboard data.

  19. Eric says: 11/05/09

    The biggest thing I miss from the previous version is in the weekly report: the ability to view the individual tasks that were done for a specific project. In the tasks I can find the specific descriptions of the time spent for that project.

    It would be very helpful if you could bring those back!

  20. jaanus says: 11/05/09

    First of all – a big thank you to everybody for the feedback! Now to the questions:

    The dashboard not showing individual hours – our developers are already fixing this and we’ll launch the fix in a few hours;

    @Karen L – the 1024×768 resolution is the minimum that we support, so we will get Toggl working with it during the next few weeks;

    @Neal – yes, we have plans to add the billable/non-billable filter back (it is currently available in the weekly view only);

    @Joe, @Sue – the Premium version (http://www.toggl.com/public/premium) has the possibility to select today, current week or current month as the dashboard time frame; so, most possibly we’ll add the previous week option to the Premium version;

    @Andy – we are now almost done with the major changes; the next releases will be for fixes and brushing things up;

    @Charles S – thank you for the bug report, we’ll investigate the wrong date issues;

    @Doug – thank you for the support!

    @C. Harwood – thanks for the suggestion, we’ll think about this;

    @Eric – yes, we have plans to bring this functionality back;

  21. Neal says: 11/05/09

    Thanks jaanus,

    Couple more little issue I found.

    Trying to add/remove tags in Firefox 3.5 didn’t appear to work.
    CSV export of tasks lists items by oldest date first

    Thanks again, Neal.

  22. jaanus says: 11/05/09

    Dashboard fixes launched!
    @Neal – maybe you could send a description of how and where you we’re trying to add tasks to our support email address, then we can look into this.

  23. hegvobj says: 11/05/09

    Love this application! But I miss the bar chart. Could you make it optional so the user can pick whichever chart they prefer?

  24. Eric says: 11/05/09

    @jaanus Thanks for the quick response!

  25. Joe says: 11/05/09

    Ditto hegvobj’s comment. I much prefer the bar chart for the number of hours on the Dashboard, over the new line chart (or give the user the option to select which type of chart they prefer for their own dashboard).
    By the way, thanks for this tool. If you have to do time-tracking, this is the way to do it!

  26. Simon Wämmerfors says: 11/06/09

    Now it seems like archived projects is showing in the Reports view again…

  27. jaanus says: 11/06/09

    Yes, the archived projects are back in the reports. We’ll also consider the bar chart suggestion.

  28. Wes says: 11/06/09

    Suggestion:
    Instead of having to hover over each “blip” on the line graphs, it would be nice if we could just hover over the vertical area of the blip (anywhere directly above or below it). This way we could just move the mouse from left-to-right and see the data quickly. Make sense?

  29. Jennifer Vickery says: 11/06/09

    I can’t seem to run a report just for myself – or one other person. I go to reports, and am not able to run just myself. It still brings everyone up.

    Also, my dashboard still has wrong dates. On 11/3 it shows 11/2, etc.

  30. Gustav says: 11/09/09

    Hi!
    Great application, I love it :-)
    Is there any chance it will get translated to Swedish?
    (Or is it perhaps possible for me to translate it?)

  31. Aileen says: 11/09/09

    Great application, I love it.

    However, a comment on the new dashboard & reports -

    Why fix something that ain’t broke and cause us all to learn how to use it all over again?

    This happens a lot on the web, I know…. everyone has to have a fresh look, keep moving, keep running, keep changing….

    Maybe I’m odd, I liked Toggl the way it was… even the old desktop timer – it was smaller and more responsive. Now I guess I’ll have to relearn the interface, because the application is great…. I just don’t see the need to change things that work!

  32. Aileen says: 11/09/09

    Hmmm,
    Now that I’ve looked at the Reports more deeply I have more to say….

    I just want to see all effort on any one task grouped together….. so that, for example, if, within the one week or one day or whatever dates I’ve chosen, I worked on:-
    Client A – Task 1 3 hours
    Client B – Task 2 2 hours
    Client A – Task 1 1 hour

    I’d expect that to show up in the report as:-
    Client A – Task 1 4 hours
    Client B – Task 2 2 hours

    And only be split into the individual components if I selected that… Am I missing something? Is there some easy way to do this? I think there used to be…

    Thanks.

  33. Antti says: 11/10/09

    The dashboard is fine, but you could still display more information on it, without sacrificing the overlook.

    I’d especially like to see the hours, not just the percentage in the dashboard overview. In my current work, we budget approximate weekly hours that we’re allowed to spend on each project, and I think many people in the advertising industry have the same conditions. Maybe as a mouseover, when you click a part of the pie chart, or simply next to the percentage (with a smaller font, if you prefer).

    Because there is a mouseover effect on the pie chart, the user also expects that clicking on it has some reacton. Now nothing happens. Maybe it could take you to that project’s page?

    PS: I’m still working on my more thorough UI feedback, I’ll get back to you on that.

  34. Jennifer Vickery says: 11/11/09

    My dashboard is showing incorrect numbers. Yesterday is it now only showing .80 of an hour and today just an hour and 18 minutes. This didn’t seem to be an issue yesterday. Can you please help?

    Thanks so much!
    Jennifer

  35. jaanus says: 11/12/09

    @Wes – Thanks for the suggestion!
    @Jennifer – We are working on the wrong date issues.
    @Gustav – It is possible for you to translate it into Swedish. We’ll have the possibility for our users to translate Toggl or fix translations using an online service soon.
    @Aileen – You can change the interface of Toggl Desktop between two of our timers. Right-click the system tray icon and you’ll be able to select your favorite. The “group by task” report is available under the project view of the reports.
    @Antti – Thank you for the suggestions!

  36. Wes says: 11/16/09

    2 more bugs when viewing reports:

    1. “No tags” is listed twice in the tag filter

    2. When I select a [client - project] in the filter menu, the list looks fine (it only shows the selected client and project). However, once I checkmark a few of them and add a tag to them, it shows me my entire client/project list but the “Client – Project Name” filter still reads the select client / project.

  37. Wes says: 11/16/09

    Just saw this:

    2. In addition to my #2 above, the “Tags” filter also gets reset.

  38. Jennifer Vickery says: 11/17/09

    My hours are not calculating correctly at all. When I refresh to check my hours on the dashboard it will show only 17 minutes, when I’ve been working on multiple tasks, tracking them all, and for hours.

    Can someone please help?

  39. jaanus says: 11/17/09

    @Wes and @Jennifer – We are releasing a new version tomorrow with a lot of fixes. We have hopefully tracked down all the issues of dashboard not showing correct numbers.

  40. Scott Rocke says: 11/17/09

    Nothing is working. I can’t get to the site and the timer doesn’t work. It has been like this for the past 2 days and I am about to cancel my account. This is disappointing.

    • alari says: 11/18/09

      Hi Scott, that is really strange. Toggl is working fine, and you should be able to log in without any problems. Please e-mail your username to support@toggl.com, also please specify what you mean by ‘can’t get to the site’. Is the site not showing up at all? Are you not able to log in? Do you see some kind of error message?

      Cheers,

      Alari

  41. Scott Rocke says: 11/18/09

    I just sent you an email. THanks.
