We’re glad to announce the first release of Toggl Desktop, our little timetracking device for your desktop. It is available for download at Toggl main page.
We have taken our one year experience with Toggl and your very helpful feedback and came up with quite radical changes:
- No need to mark your tasks completed anymore
Closing tasks is not necessary anymore, Toggl Desktop takes care of it when a new day begins. - Easier handling of recurring tasks
Toggl Desktop remembers the tasks you worked on during the last seven days and shows you these names as quick links to start tracking time on the task. The task will automatically track time with the current date. - Better overview of time spent on a task
You can see time spent on a task or project during this week by simply hovering your mouse over its name.

Even though Toggl Desktop is still in beta, it is fully functional for tracking time without logging on to the web page.
Current version is usable in Windows only and needs .NET framework 2.0 to be installed. Get your Toggl Desktop now!

Those are some awesome changes! How about integrating them into the web version? I use toggl on both Windows and Linux, I would use it on Linux more if those changes were on the web.

We’re planning to do exactly that, Brendon, if these changes get an overall good feedback. We won’t change the way Toggl works on the web just now, but it’s highly likely in a couple of months it’ll works similar to Toggl Desktop.
An OS X version of Toggl Desktop is on our list of things to do, Barbara, but I wouldn’t put a deadline on it just yet

Hey guys, thanks so much for this application! I was actually going to do the exact same thing for my project in one of my .NET GUI classes using the toggl api. Guess you beat me to it!
I was thinking though, that since you used .NET this program should be very easy to port to Linux/Unix (Including BSD & Mac). I’ve been reading up on the Mono Project (.NET port for linux) and if perhaps you guys can release the source for the desktop app, maybe the community can help work on making some linux/mac versions!

A small bug : it prevents my XP to shut down, i need to manually exit it from the system tray before i can shut down my XP.
Feature : it starts counting time pretty quickly: i often find myself stopping the timer because i click on a task. Maybe this could be helped by doing it like this: when a task timer is activated: start counting, but with an button option to cancel it as well, resetting the time back to zero.

The button option is an interesting idea, we’ll think about adding it. Until then you can delete the task from the edit view (it is a bit slower, I know)

Any chance of this running on a Flash drive? I’d love to be able to run the ‘desktop’ app when ever I go into a clients office to do some work.
I can’t start Toggl Desktop since some days. Had been working fine, but now I just get the windows message “Toggl Desktop has a problem and was closed” (I get that in german, sorry, I don’t know the exact english phrase, but it’s the common thing). There is no other information, no error code or so. I have installed your recent software 0.8.5 and also uninstalled and reinstalled without change.
Any chance you can get it to work with proxy servers? I really dig this tool but I can’t use it at 75% of my customers

I still get that error. I’m sorry, I can’t really remember whether and what software I installed after. I’ve made a repair-install of .NET 2.0 but this didn’t help eihter.
Any hints? S.th. that I could try?
It would be helpful to publish the version number with the Toggl-Desktop download to find out whether you’ve updated.
How ’bout letting us re-order the projects in the desktop window?
Right now, projects appears alphabetically, but many of our “projects” are named very similarly, meaning I must scroll through a long list to reach the two on which I work most often. As a result, I often click the wrong project. and must delete the newly created task before finding the correct project. Wastes time!
I’d like to be able to move my most often accessed projects to the top. Better yet, I’d like the option of having Toggl do it FOR ME!
Are you planning on releasing the source for us *nix people to build from?
I started to use your PC app yesterday and was very happy with it and it did in fact work in my office where we have a proxy and proxy array. This morning I had to change my login pssw for my lap top and then the proxy array asks me to enter the same when I access the internet for the first time. I’m not sure if this is causing the problem but now the Toggle desk top can’t connect to your server. I have no issues at all getting to your web site and start my timer there but the PC refuse to work. If I choose any other proxy I get an authentication error.
Do you know about this and is there a fix?

Cedric, on startup Toggl Desktop automatically checks from the server whether a new version is available. But we’ll take adding a version number under consideration
Margie, we have the reordering of projects on our list of things to do
In the meanwhile perhaps the search function will help a bit in avoiding starting tasks under wrong projects.
Tyler, we will have to make some modifications to the code before releasing it, but we’ll certainly give a shout when it’s out in the open.

I heard about the desktop app and decided to try toggl out again – great job! The desktop bit was the missing piece, for me.
That being said, the desktop app no longer works. After faithfully tracking 3 days last week, now it just crashes on startup with the standard ‘tell microsoft about this problem’ screen. I have tried reinstalling, no help. Any advice?
I am having the same problem as Nathan! It was working beautifully for two days, then it throws an error every time I try to run it. So I uninstalled and reinstalled – same thing happens.
Last night, I did a hard shut down of my machine (i.e. I accidentally unplugged it), so that might have something to do with it….??
There was also a hard shutdown of my machine (a process that would not die nor let windows shutdown gracefully)… perhaps something is corrupted that’s not getting removed by the uninstall? I searched the usual places, but I could have missed something.

We don’t use proxies, .NET framework is installed.

I am having the same problem as Matt & Nathan, although I don’t recall a crash but it is possible. It was working for 2-3 weeks and just yesterday it crapped out; nothing but micrsoft report errors. Anything???

I continue to get the same error messages as Steve.
I’ve been using the software for a few months now and have found some major issues:
1) For some reason my consistently says “offline mode” despite being online all the time.
2) When in “offline mode” after I closed the application and restarted all the times logged for the past 3 weeks have been completely lost including the new tasks I had created for them
Please keep up the good work as I want to implement this software in various organisations I work for but its too unstable to do so at the moment. Exposing an API for development would also be great
Dear Anthony, it seems that you have some kind of proxy. Toggl Desktop requires direct http connection to operate correctly.
Alternatively you can use Toggl Timer ( http://www.toggl.com/timer ), which has the same functionality, but is entirely browser based.
API is available – check http://www.toggl.com/doc/api/ for more information.

Hi Ali, you don’t need to close the tasks. Tasks will automatically disappear from the Toggl Desktop task list after 7 days. We’ll add a feature that you can remove them from the list also manually.
Hi – I’m not sure where else to leave this, but I was running toggl all day, even sent a love note to you all for creating it. Then….crash. It doesn’t recognize me, the web version doesn’t know me, desktop won’t log in – nada. Very upsetting, to say the least. Lots of hours logged. Quite disheartening, as I thought I’d found the cure to my time-tracking. Any thoughts on what may have happened? Maybe something on the back end? I would appreciate any help you can lend. How can I use toggl desktop with google sign in?
And if I can’t, how do I add/set a password for toggl (when using google sign in)?
I tried changing it in settings with “current password” as blank or as my google password, none of which did the trick. It says that “Current password must be valid.” Which begs the question, what is a valid password for a toggl account using google sign in?

Is there any difference now between the current versions of the Toggl Timer Widget (Adobe Air) and the Toggl Desktop App on Windows?
The timer in the Widget is the same as the timer in Toggl web. Toggl Desktop, on the other hand, is built on a completely different platform. TDesktop also features the autopilot functionality (http://blog.toggl.com/2008/10/13/toggl-desktop-is-now-smarter-than-ever/) and will soon be able to handle full offline mode.
The basics are the same: to help you track tasks conveniently. It’s also a matter of taste, you choose which one you like the best.

I love the timer app except for one thing (and maybe I’m just overlooking something)…
When I click on a task, is there any way to make it automatically start timing? It seems counter intuitive to have to click the task, THEN click the red timer button to start tracking time.
Also, will you be adding a “calculate” button for the times so if you have to go back and edit times, it will calculate the time for you?
aeternus, currently there is no possibility to use Google signin with Toggl Desktop. You have to use your Toggl account. When you registered using Google, then an email was sent to you from Toggl with your account’s password. In short, there are two ways of signing in to Toggl. If you prefer Google signin, you can use that, or if you would like to use your Toggl account, you can use that one. The Google singin is just for signing in, nothing else. If you have forgotten your Toggl account’s password, you can get a new one using the “Forgot password” feature.
Brandie, yes it can be done. There is a user setting under “My Settings” called “Start tasks automatically in the Timer”. That one just does that.
Since the web version of Timer already has the “Calculate” button then we’ll add one for the Toggl Desktop soon.

David, gmail sign in cannot be used with Toggl Desktop for technical reasons. You have to use your Toggl account.

This is on Windows XP – for some reason, the Toggl Desktop window is completely blank. Right-click brings up a menu only with “Reload”, clicking that does nothing.
Any ideas why? (I saw somebody else posted about this here http://getsatisfaction.com/toggl/topics/problem_starting_toggl_on_windows_7_64bit but that was on Windows 7).

I’ve foung Toggl tool quite usefult, but I can’t use Toggl Desktop because of proxy. It seems proxy is an open question since 2007. Is there any hope to see Toggl Desktop working behind proxy, which is used in all enterprises?

Why are the items per Project ordered alphabetically? I realy would like to have the option to put them in order of the time of entry…
